I went on a 4 hour walk today to the road, which runs accross the top of a mountain. We climbed to it walked along a section until we reached an ordnance survey trig point.
The road is very old and in quite bad repair now sadly, but occasionally you find a section that's startling good that reminds you of the amazing effort the romans exerted to build this and other roads in their empire.
Because of the remote location, the knowledge that romans once walked the mountain, numerous pre-roman burial mounds and other ancient human endeavors it has a kind of magical feel. You find old growth trees covered in moss and many kinds of lichen and funghi.
