Neath itself is a very old town, apparently founded by the Romans in about AD70, with suggestions of older Celtic settlements found in the surrounding areas that have yet to be properly dated.
The Great Neath Fair, properly called Neath Chartered Street Trading Fair, was granted it's charter in 1280 by Gilbert de Clare, making this years fair in 2014 the approximately 734th fair.
I say approximately because while the charter was granted in 1280 I'm not sure the first fair was actually in 1280.
The fair has two components, the street market and the amusement fair - I took the pictures today at the street market. This is the fair of my childhood, and the first time I have photographed it.
- The University of Sheffield has a National Fairground Archive that is worth a look, it includes a handful of photographs dating back as far 1903.
